Get Involved with Virginia Home for Boys and Girls

For nearly 180 years, Virginia Home for Boys and Girls (VHBG) has been a steady place of safety and belonging for young people. Today, our work reaches youth in group homes, independent living, John G. Wood School, and through therapeutic and mental health support across Virginia.

When you get involved, you are not just giving to a campus. You are helping create safe, stable, and inclusive spaces where young people can feel connected, build meaningful relationships, develop vital skills, and navigate life with confidence.

There are many ways to make a difference. Choose what fits you best: your time, your resources, your network, your voice.

Give Now

Your financial gift gives VHBG the flexibility to meet the greatest needs of the youth and young adults we serve, from keeping homes staffed and safe to supporting classrooms, counseling, and outreach.

About half of our funding comes through public contracts. The other half depends on donors, foundations, and partners like you. Every gift helps ensure that when a young person needs us, VHBG is ready.

Ways to Give

Looking for a different way to support VHBG? These options may be a better fit for your goals or planning.

Employer and Corporate Giving

Matching gifts, workplace campaigns, and corporate sponsorships can multiply your impact while engaging your colleagues and brand in meaningful community work.

Gifts of Stocks or Security

Donating appreciated assets may offer tax advantages while providing strong support for VHBG programs.

Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs)

Recommend a grant from your DAF. It is a simple way to turn resources you have already set aside for charity into immediate help for young people. VHBG’s legal name is Virginia Home for Boys and Girls and our tax ID is 54-0506330.

Planned and legacy giving

Include VHBG in your will, trust, retirement plan, or beneficiary designations and create a legacy that continues to open doors for future generations.

If you are interested in any of these options, contact our Philanthropy team for easy next steps and sample language to share with your advisor.

Volunteer

Volunteers help VHBG feel like a community, not just a campus. One caring adult can change the trajectory of a young person’s life. Your time and presence send a powerful message: you belong, and you matter.

Individual volunteers may support:

  • Campus projects and events
  • Administrative or behind-the-scenes work
  • Professional skills-based projects (marketing, IT, HR, facilities, and more)

Groups and corporate teams can:

  • Participate in one-day service projects
  • Take on campus beautification, painting, organizing, and event support
  • Combine volunteering with giving or sponsorship

How to get started:

  1. Complete the interest or application form.
  1. Our team will follow up with the next steps, including any required training or background checks.

In-Kind Support and High-Impact Items

In-kind gifts help us keep homes comfortable, classrooms ready, and young adults equipped for independence. These gifts turn bare rooms into real living spaces and help students show up ready to learn.

Common high-impact items include:

  • Gift cards (groceries, clothing, household items)
  • New twin bedding and linens
  • Adult bicycles, locks, and helmets
  • Gently used luggage and duffel bags
  • Toiletries and personal care items

Before organizing a drive, please reach out and confirm priority items to be sure your donations match today’s needs.
